István Bocskai (Stephen) was a Prince of Transylvania from 1605-6. His father’s estates were located in the Eastern part of Transylvania which was transformed into a principality. The northern and western regions of Hungary were overseen by the Holy Roman Empire, who closely aligned with Bocskai. At a time when the Ottomans were attempting to overtake Hungary, Bocskai fought to keep his principality Christian and part of the Holy League. He marched on Wallachia (now modern day Romania and the home to the infamous Vlad the Impaler, otherwise known as Dracula) and successfully liberated the citizens from the Ottomans on September 29, 1595 at the Battle of Guirgui.
