The coins of Elis provide a unique link to the past that many coins do not. The fact that these coins were specifically struck to celebrate the Olympic games makes them all the more fascinating. While the games of antiquity are different from the modern take, it still exemplifies the enduring popularity of the games. The original games started in 776 BC in Olympia. The games were always held in that city and occurred every four years, a schedule which continues to this day. One difference is that the games of the past were linked heavily to a religious festival which held sports as their primary function. Nude men, competed to honor the god Zeus. The games of today are secular in nature with no connection to religion. Additionally, there are a myriad of sports with more being added throughout the years. The original games had only five events: discus toss, javelin throw, long jump, stadion (foot race), and wrestling. Other sports found a place in the Olympics throughout the years such as boxing, wrestling, pankration (unarmed combat sport), and chariot racing. In the 4th century BC, Philip II of Macedon, famously competed and won for chariot racing.

The games were held for hundreds of years, from 776 BC until 393 AD. After that point there was a break of over 1503 years. The first modern Olympic games was held notably in Greece, although in this case Athens in 1896. A Frenchman dreamed up the idea and meant for it to take place in Paris. After enthusiasm grew for the famous event, he was convinced to hold the event in Greece as the first modern day Olympics. Since that point the games have moved from country to country.
