Olynthus is located on the Chalcidice Peninsula of Greece. The name means “fruit of the wild fig tree” although from the coins one does not get that symbolism. The mythological founder of Olynthus is the god of the same name. Originally Olynthus was a rather insignificant Greek polis but over time there was synoecism in which other Greek city-states sent people to fully inhabit the polis. By the time this coin was struck in 382 BC, Olynthus transformed into a rather important city and was even the head of the formal Delian League.
