The coinage of Athens was amongst the earliest silver coins that circulated throughout the Greek world. Until Alexander’s coinage in c. 336 BC took over as the main international currency, Athenian coins were struck all over the known Greek city states. Some coins made their way far from their minting place in Athens. Additionally, mints in certain areas like Philistia (modern day Gaza) had their own interpretation of the Athenian coinage. Sometimes coins would show Athena with a Aramaic letter on the cheek or on the Athens ethnic on the reverse. Other times a stylized version of the Athenian coins would be created such as this one with the Athena replaced by a bearded male and a stylized owl and the Aramaic script replacing the Athenian one.
