Alexander the Great struck coinage in mints all over his kingdom; it became a currency for payment to his troops of which there were many. While some were struck during his lifetime, many were posthumous and continued to be struck and circulate for several years after his sudden death. The four Diodachi (Ptolemy, Antigonus, Cassander, and Seleucus) quickly scrambled and took over Alexander's domain. The conversion to their own dynasty coinage was further away. They continued to use Alexander's style of coinage with Herakles on the obverse and Zeus on the reverse but with their own names designated as king.

Some scholars suggested that the Zeus with uncrossed legs was a lifetime issue of Alexander. This theory has been more or less debunked but Price does seem to designate many issues in this style as lifetime. The offered coin from the Tarsus mint was likely struck prior to Alexander's death or shortly thereafter.
