Joshua Benevento Numismatist

Joshua Benenvento is a lifelong coin collector, numismatist, and opera singer whose engagement with antiquity bridges music and material culture. He began collecting coins as a child in the 1980s, assembling Whitman albums and accompanying his parents—both antique dealers—to auctions, where he developed an early familiarity with historical objects and collecting traditions. His first ancient coin, a Porcius Festus prutah purchased by his mother in Bethlehem in 1992, sparked a lasting interest in ancient numismatics.

In 2006, following an intensive character study of the emperor Nero and the poet Lucan while performing in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, he began collecting ancient coins in earnest. He collects coins foremost for their artistic quality—style, balance, and expression—approaching them as miniature works of sculpture, and remains active in the numismatic community through online forums and national shows.
