The light coinage of Cynethryth, wife of King Offa of Mercia (r. 757–796), is among the most remarkable and rarest issues of early Anglo-Saxon numismatics. Cynethryth is the only Anglo-Saxon queen known to have had coins struck in her name, a striking assertion of female authority in a period when royal women were typically absent from official statecraft. These coins, part of the "light coinage" phase introduced during Offa’s monetary reforms in the 790s, were modeled closely on contemporary Romanesque portraiture. One of the known moneyers associated with Cynethryth’s coinage is Eoba, a figure whose name appears on a handful of these rare silver pennies. His obverse inscription can be seen on this particular coin as “EOBA”. The participation of a formal moneyer suggested that the minting of this type was more than ceremonial. In fact it indicates the possibility that Cynethryth played an active role in Mercian governance.
In fact, Cynethryth was the ONLY Anglo-saxon queen to have coins struck in her name!
