Klazomenai was one of the twelve cities of ancient Ionia and a member of the Ionian League during their famed revolt from the Achaemenid Empire. Given the dire nature of the Persian threat, the city chose the dramatic step to relocate from its original mainland site at Limantepe to the Karantina Island just off the coast during the Revolt! Despite taking such drastic measures, the revolt ultimately failed. For Klazomenai, the consequences were severe. The freedom that had briefly seemed within reach evaporated, and the city returned to the orbit of the Achaemenid Empire. It is against this backdrop that the winged boar didrachm takes on its full meaning. The Hus Klazomenaios, the great winged sow of local legend, was said to have ravaged the very territory of Klazomenai. According to Aelian, there is a local shrine that was celebrated as "The Place of the Winged Sow." In choosing this design during the revolt, the Klazomenians were proudly promoting their pan-Hellenic mythology. However, the coins did not really outlast the revolt, when in 494 BCE, local silver production contracted sharply.
