To truly appreciate the 1/96th stater, you have to shift your perspective. In the modern pocket a dime feels small, but in the ancient palm, a 1/96th stater must have felt miniscule. We are talking about a denomination that pushed the very limits of physical minting technology available in the 6th century BC. When we describe these coins as being roughly 4 to 6 millimeters in diameter, it’s difficult to visualize without a comparison. To put that into a modern context, they are smaller than a standard pencil eraser and roughly the size of a single peppercorn. These coins are so light that a sudden sneeze could literally blow them off the table! Given their miniature size, and the fact that gold was almost exclusively reserved for state-to-state payments, one has to wonder about the "user experience" in an Ionian marketplace.
