One of the most famous Judean coins, the Jewish Revolt shekels stand as a testament to the sweeping anti-Roman sentiment during the vicious 5-year insurgent war. The type shows a clear break from the standard Roman numismatic imagery and economic power in the region. By replacing the image of the emperor with the Omer cup on the obverse and Judean pomegranate while employing Hebrew legends (written in archaic proto-Hebrew), this demonstrates their independent spirit. Additionally, as this mint was almost certainly located within the sacred Temple complex, the coins are known to have been struck from recycled Tyrian shekels collected from the yearly Temple tax of one Tyrian half-shekel. As such, these coins were intimately tied to a pivotal period in the Jewish culture, faith, and history.
