This handsome silver rupee of Queen Victoria was struck at the Calcutta Mint in 1887 during the height of the British Raj in India. The rupee had long been the principal monetary unit of the Indian subcontinent, and under British administration it became one of the most widely circulated silver coins in the global economy of the nineteenth century.

The obverse features the crowned bust of Queen Victoria facing left, reflecting her role not only as Queen of the United Kingdom but also as Empress of India, a title formally assumed in 1876 following the consolidation of British authority after the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The portrait emphasizes imperial dignity and stability, projecting the authority of the British crown across the vast territories of the Indian Empire.

The reverse displays the denomination and date within an elegant floral wreath, a design that combines classical European numismatic aesthetics with decorative motifs that harmonize with Indian artistic traditions. Such stylistic choices were typical of British colonial coinage, which sought to balance imperial symbolism with regional visual elements.

Rupees of this period circulated extensively throughout South Asia and played a crucial role in international trade, particularly in regions where silver remained the preferred medium of exchange. Coins struck at Calcutta were produced in large numbers, yet examples preserved in high mint state remain highly desirable.

This specimen has been certified NGC MS63, displaying strong detail and attractive surfaces for the type, making it an appealing representative of late nineteenth-century British Indian silver coinage.
