C. Vibius C.f. C.n. Pansa Caetronianus (d. April 43 BC) belongs among the more consequential secondary figures of the late Republic, chiefly by virtue of his consulship of 43. The polyonymous form of his name is itself informative: the cognomen Caetronianus indicates birth into the gens Caetronia followed by adoption into the Vibii Pansae, in accordance with Republican adoptive nomenclature. His natural or adoptive father appears among the victims of the Sullan proscriptions, a circumstance that renders his subsequent Caesarian allegiance intelligible. As tribune of the plebs in 51 he acted in defense of Caesar's interests at Rome, and under the dictatorship he was entrusted with the government of Bithynia and Pontus and subsequently of Cisalpine Gaul.

For numismatists, Pansa's significance rests upon his tenure as moneyer in 48 BC, where he was responsible for an extensive and typologically varied emission of denarii. The issue includes a mask of the bearded, snub-nosed Pan in a canting allusion to the cognomen Pansa. Such punning types exemplify the self-referential advertisement characteristic of Republican moneyers.

His historical reputation, however, derives from the circumstances of his death. As consul of 43 with A. Hirtius, he commanded senatorial forces against Mark Antony in the civil war. Wounded at Forum Gallorum in April, he succumbed shortly thereafter.
