The coinage of the Romans, under the Republic converted from the heavy, somewhat clumsy Aes Grave, to the smaller and more artistic (by matter of opinion of course) silver quadrigatus and eventually quinarius and denarius by the middle of the 3rd century BC. Moving forward there was a marked change to the coinage by the myriad of gods/goddesses and innuendo to the moneyers of the time. This coin was struck under M. Aburius M. f. Geminus in c. 132 BC. It reflects the monumental change in the coinage of Athena for the obverse and the quadriga reverse. However, the change from a normal charioteer to that of the god Sol, the personification of the sun, with the radiate crown, is a notable difference.
