Tokens are 1811/1812 were a direct result of the British government using its silver normally reserved for coinage instead to help arm themselves for a possible Napoleonic invasion. Different from the earlier tokens where merchants advertised their goods in coin form, these tokens were created by industrialists.

The person responsible for the creation of this token, William Booth Perry Barr was actually hanged in 1812 for counterfeiting.
