This silver penny of the Jewel Cross type struck under Harold I (Harold Harefoot) who reigned from 1035 to 1040 CE, by the Moneyer Widia, is a significant issue. It reflects both the continuity and challenges of early 11th-century English coinage. Like the coins of his predecessors, these pennies feature a right facing crowned bust of the king on the obverse. Meanwhile, the potentially more interesting reverse showcases the distinctive titular jewel-like cross with ornate terminals. This cross symbolizes both the king’s Christian faith and royal authority to help cement his imperial legitimacy. An especially important issue during this period that was marked by contested succession and political instability following the death of Canute the Great. Additionally, the coins maintained a high silver content, crucial for sustaining economic confidence.
