A rare and attractive silver hemidrachm struck on the island of Prokonnesos in the Sea of Marmara during the late Classical period. Prokonnesos-modern Marmara Island-was well known in antiquity for its valuable marble quarries, which supplied stone for numerous monuments across the Greek world, particularly in nearby cities such as Cyzicus and later Constantinople.
The obverse depicts a serene female head, generally interpreted as a local nymph or protective deity associated with the island. The reverse features an oinochoe, a wine jug used in symposia and ritual libations, a type that likely reflects local cult practice or the importance of wine consumption in Greek social and religious life. The simple yet elegant design typifies the restrained aesthetic of many late Classical civic issues from the northern Aegean.
Silver issues from Prokonnesos are quite scarce, and examples with strong detail and clear provenance are seldom encountered on the market.
