Maurice Laffaille, a renowned French collector, assembled what is widely regarded as one of the most important private cabinets of ancient Greek bronze coinage. Comprising 663 pieces, the collection was genuinely panoramic. It ranged across the whole Greek bronze-issuing world, from the Western Mediterranean through mainland Greece and Asia Minor to North Africa. The collection is documented in two principal publications. The first, Laffaille's own Choix de Monnaies Grecques en Bronze (Geneva, 1982), presents a selection of approximately 200 pieces with enlarged monochrome photography by Jean Lacombe. It is best characterized as a connoisseurial anthology rather than a systematic catalogue. The second, Pierre Strauss's Collection Maurice Laffaille: Monnaies grecques en bronze (Basel, 1990), with an introduction by Michel Amandry, records 663 specimens. Due to Strauss's affiliation with Münzen & Medaillen AG, this reference volume functions effectively as the scholarly apparatus of the dispersal sale.
